Jimrat

Jimrat was an alternative rock band based in Boston, Massachusetts, where the designer served as art director, responsible for developing the band’s visual identity. This included creating graphics, directing and editing visual content, and designing merchandise in alignment with the music. The visual system extended the band’s sound into a cohesive world defined by eerie, liminal, noisy, and ironic aesthetics, resonating within the local underground music community.Band members included Sam (singer), Emma (guitar), Tim (drums), E (bass), and Josie (guitar and backup vocals).

Throughout our collaboration, I helped curate the image and aesthetic of the band. We wanted to create a sense of mysticism and weirdness in the energy brought to shows. Along with the visuals, there was an implied paranormal presence within the identity. Art styles and subcultures such as punk, post-punk, and liminal spaces were combined to build this atmosphere of unease and intrigue. The band regularly played shows locally, and at their peak, they began touring throughout the East Coast.

Our first large-scale project was a music video I shot and edited for one of their singles from an EP titled Jimrat, released in the summer of 2024. The imagery was inspired by deep internet culture references, such as liminal spaces, and was edited in a found-footage style. I also directed and shot promotional material used for digital marketing, helping maintain a consistent social presence.

Jimrat II was our final collaboration. With an album cover and three singles, these final works summarize our stylistic relationship, defined by asymmetrical compositions and spacious layouts. It was the perfect send-off before the band’s temporary split.

Instant was the title of their debut album. The title was inspired by Clarice Lispector’s Água Viva and the idea of the “instant”, the moment within the moment, being present, and flowing with life. Sam, the lead vocalist, wanted to create a visual album, an overarching narrative spanning the entire project, with music videos for each song. The concept leaned into the band’s implied paranormal character, set in a forest. In his words, “I want Midsommar, but in Massachusetts during the winter.” The video incorporated choreography, dance sequences, live performances, and scripted scenes.

As art director, I was responsible for curating the visual aesthetic, coordinating styling and outfits, and communicating with the cinematographers and directors to ensure the artistic vision was realized. In promotion of the visual album, we produced several song covers and the album cover to establish a new era of Jimrat, colder, creepier, and more enigmatic. The video and album art were edited by me and shot alongside a team of producers.

“I Hate Shoegaze” was our most successful collaboration and predates the production of Instant. Sam and I wanted to create a fast-paced, visually striking experience inspired by Wong Kar-wai films. I curated the visual identity and coordinated outfits, styling, and makeup for the band members. I worked closely with the director and cinematographer, and we shot throughout the Boston metro area and Chinatown. I handled pre-production planning and post-production, editing the video in its entirety. The result is an energetic, cathartic experience that ends as it begins, but with an intensity that captures the power that was Jimrat. The artwork used was a 3d model of a grotesque H.R giger inspired guitar created in blender.
